The one thing all trataka meditation practices have in common is focus, the ability to concentrate on that which you have intended to gaze at, to not shift your focus to the processing of the mind or the thoughts of the future or memories of the past, to stay fixed on one single point.

Trataka meditation is a very old and intuitive form of meditation it means simply to gaze, this could be at the moon or the rising or setting sun, at the flame of a fire and many other things. TRATAKA CANDLE GAZING MEDITATION WORKSHOP with Cody SAT 3 SEPT | 1:30PM- 2:30PM This meditation requires immense amounts of patience, focus and stillness, but can be practiced by beginners or the most advanced yogi. This is when our ability to focus comes into play, as we allow the waves of thought to settle and follow the thread of consciousness to the source of all knowledge – the Self. Our mind will answer based on our understanding and beliefs of personal knowledge, but when the mind runs through all that, we know our conscious awareness will begin to lead us the the answer. Everything in reality is connected – our mind and consciousness are not separate, but actually parts that make up a whole. Meaning ‘I am that which is’ – from this statement comes the question Ramamaharishi asked himself “Who am I? If I am that, then who am I?”. The Upanishads states Tat Tvam Asi, translating to ‘that thou art’ or ‘you are that’. This technique of meditation became very highly practiced after Sri Ramana Maharishi began to only teach yoga through this one meditation practice, teaching that if the correct question was asked to yourself, then the mind only had one place to go.
